Ads in “context” can get weird

OK. This context sensitive ad business is just getting too damn weird. Today, alongside my profile in a social network to which I belong, was a Pandora ad promoting Brewer and Shipley singing “One Toke Over the Line.” No real relation and only ex-Hippies ask me about it.

Rainbow Gathering(On the side, apparently, hippie culture is resurrecting in Russia, as learned hunting for a “hippie” image for this post.

Alexander Konovalenko, (Flickr here) has this image posted in Wikipedia. Scary, but I think I used to own a vest like that! Sadly, Wiki has no mention of Brewer and Shipley in the article on hippies.)

What’s your experience with context sensitive ads that miss the point?

  1. Contextual ads work best for pages that get search traffic. Otherwise, it’s often a bust, and interruption marketing.
